Pearl City Computer Geek Society
Some may ask why PCCGS chose to use a linux operating system rather than the better know Microsoft Windows. The reasons are many-
  • Cost- we could not afford licenses for all of the systems we donate.
  • Security- Linux is much more secure- not affected by virus and spyware.
  • Ease of use- There is a slight learning curve of differences but use is easier.
  • Software- Most needed programs are installed by default- no trips to the software store.
We have chosen to use Ubuntu linux from the many versions available. Unbuntu is currently one of the most popular and best supported distributions. More information is located at their website- ubuntu.com

Getting over FUD (fear, uncertainity, and doubt)-
People don't like change. Linux is nothing to fear. Think of borrowing your neighbor's car to visit a nearby city. Some of the controls and knobs are in a slightly different location from your car. When you arrive at your destination most of the street names will be different. If you get lost you stop at the a convience store to ask directions. But you do get there and return home safely.

With linux, some of the menus will be in a different location and software may not have a familiar name. But you can accomplish your task and your computer will be more stable and secure.
